Potential Cost and Aid Changes

Overview

As more information becomes available or changes, your estimated cost of attendance and financial aid eligibility could change.

Factors that may impact cost and/or aid eligibility may include:

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Common Application Data

External Sources

  • If you are receiving external/private scholarships, grants, employer tuition benefits, third-party sponsorships, or other funds to assist with educational costs
  • Legislative changes from the state or federal governments that impact aid programs

Other Changes by the Student

  • Your residency status (charged tuition/fees as a resident of West Virginia or non-resident of the state or if you qualify for a reduced tuition program). Residency is determined by the information you provided on your admissions application. Visit our Residency webpage for more information on tuition and fees based on residency for each campus - including reduced tuition options if applicable.
  • Your degree type (associate, bachelor's, etc.)
  • Your program of study (Engineering, Biology, Accounting, etc.) and/or college (Business and Economics, Arts and Sciences, etc.)
  • Your academic level (undergraduate, graduate, professional, freshman, sophomore, etc.). Your academic level for your aid offer coincides with the number of credits you have earned at the time your aid offer is created. Your level will not include credits for courses you are enrolled in or have not completed at the time of the aid offer.
  • The campus you are admitted to (Morgantown, Beckley, Keyser, Online, Martinsburg, Charleston)
  • Your enrollment. Cost and financial aid are estimated based on anticipated full-time enrollment in courses eligible for federal aid (with the exception of a few graduate programs that traditionally have half-time enrollment). Should you not enroll full-time, your cost and/or aid may be adjusted to reflect your eligibility based on your actual enrollment.
  • Your housing and living expenses. Living expenses can be impacted by choices you make such as where you choose to live on or off- campus or the dining plan you choose.
    • Your estimated housing and food may be listed as billable (direct) costs if we have anticipated that you may be living in a residence hall or University Apartment or sign up for a dining plan. These items being included in your billable costs for financial aid purposes does not guarantee you will be billed for them.
    • If your estimated housing and food is listed as non billable (indirect) costs, we have anticipated that you will be living off campus. Even if you are living off-campus, you will see estimated personal and transportation costs in your estimated cost of attendance because these are educational expenses you may have.
  • Your course materials such as remaining opted in for the First Day Complete course materials program vs. opting out.
  • Your overall grade point average (GPA)
  • Your ACT and/or SAT scores (for scholarship eligibility for first-time students)
  • For continuing students (i.e. those who have taken or are taking courses at WVU as an admitted student), you must also be maintaining satisfactory academic progress for financial aid eligibility at the end of each spring semester in order to keep most types of financial aid for the upcoming aid year

Monitor your Financial Aid Information through your WVU Portal for up-to-date information on your estimated cost and aid.

Scholarships

Scholarship eligibility may change as new information becomes available, including documentation showing increases or decreases in test scores or GPA. Some scholarships are specific to campus, residency, or major and may be reduced or canceled should those factors change.

Overawards

Revisions to a student’s financial aid offer can occur for many reasons, but most frequently it is because the student is receiving more financial aid than federal and/or state guidelines permit (called an overaward).

An "over award" can be the result of receiving additional financial aid - such as scholarships, tuition waivers or other financial aid assistance - after your original financial aid eligibility was reviewed and processed.

If adjustments were made to financial aid because of an over award and financial aid was already applied to your account, you may now owe a balance and will be charged accordingly by the WVU Hub. Students can view up-to-the-minute information on their financial aid through their Financial Aid Information via their WVU Portal. Billing and payment information can be found via WVU MyAccount (accessed through the "PAY YOUR BILL HERE!" button on the WVU Portal).

Withdrawal

Withdrawing from one or more courses after the semester begins can also impact your financial aid. For additional details about how these changes are calculated and what aid can be affected, visit our Withdrawal and Aid Changes webpage.

Cost Change Impacts on Aid

A student's overall cost of attendance dictates how much financial aid they can receive. As more information becomes available or changes and impacts your estimated cost of attendance, adjustments must be made within your aid offer to accommodate for those changes while still adhereing to the regulations and restrictions on each aid type or fund.

Therefore, it is important to be aware that as your information changes in any of the ways listed in the Overview section above that your eligibility for aid can subsequently change.
