VFW Voice of Democracy State Waiver

Application Process

An undergraduate tuition waiver is offered to the first place winner of the Veterans of Foreign Wars State of West Virginia Voice of Democracy Competition. While no longer mandated under state policy, WVU continues to honor these waivers.

More information about the competition can be found on the Youth Scholarships page of the VFW website. The WVU Hub is notified of the winners by the WV Higher Education Policy Commission.

Eligibility

Students may be considered for this waiver if they meet all of the following criteria:

  • Have been admitted into a degree-seeking undergraduate program.
  • Have not earned a bachelor's, graduate, or professional degree.
  • Enrolled full-time in their degree program.

Students cannot receive waivers for more than eight undergraduate semesters or completion of a bachelors degree, whichever comes first.

Additional Requirements

  • Students cannot receive the waiver for more than 8 semesters of full-time enrollment or after completion of a bachelor's, graduate, or professional degree.
  • Financial aid for each aid year also cannot exceed a student's cost of attendance.
  • Students must meet satisfactory academic progress for financial aid eligibility.
  • This waiver is considered a WVU institutional scholarship and eligible students may submit the Scholarship Exception Request form to receive the waiver while enrolled half-time (under qualifying circumstances). More information is available on our Scholarship Exception Request webpage. Students must still meet the other conditions for the waiver. Students enrolled less than half-time are not eligible for this waiver at any of the WVU campuses.
  • Visit the Waivers webpage for other important general waiver criteria.
